I learned from a friend MANY yrs ago about licid dreaming- because I’ve ALWAYS recalled my dreams and am SO entertained by them.
She said a few things that have helped me: (Thanks Lishy!)
1. Lucid dreaming is when you are conscious of the fact that you are in a dream. Thus, you are able to control/influence the dream you’re in. (It is the most F-ing cool thing you’ll ever experience, btw!) If you can recognize when you’re dreaming, you can then manipulate what you do/see/hear/smell, whatever!
2. In a dream, you cannot turn on or off the lights. So, if you are lucid in a dream, locate a lamp, light switch or light source and go up to it. If you attempt to turn it on or off, and it doesn’t do what you what- BAM! You’re dreaming! Proceed to manipulate your surroundings.
3. If you want a sure-fire way to check if you’re dreaming, jump up in the air. In awake life, you naturally fall back down and you feel the sensation of your feet hitting the ground and the shock goes up your legs. While dreaming, you may hit the ground, but the sensation/shock is absent! Or, even cooler, you’ll float!!!
I’ve tested both of these and they WORK! You just have to train yourself to question these things in your dreams. I practice asking myself while awake, “I wonder if I’m dreaming right now?” And I’ll jump up and feel the sensation of landing. Or I’ll flick a light switch. (I’m training myself to ask this question so it’s not novel in my life, which means I’ll be more likely to ask it while I’m dreaming…)
I absolutely LOVE to fly in my dreams, and whenever I’ve found myself dreaming, that’s what I do! Simply the most fun EVER!!! Hope some of you try this and have success! ENJOY!!!
Lennie, are you sure you didn’t go to med school?
(It used to be a cliche that the only one who could read a doctor’s handwriting was a pharmacist. Now they just email the prescription to the pharmacy.)
Too many of the dreams I vividly remember revolve around having to use the “facilities,” but they are illogically installed in the middle of a public area.
I’ve had the most bizarre dreams during quarantine. And what are you supposed to call it anyway…shelter in place? quarantine? isolation? seclusion? solitary confinement? PS—nice to see that Ginger found there is other life out there.
When I was at high school at Burncoat, I was learning to play all these wonderful viola concertos and I would start dreaming of my own. Dad suggested I put a tape recorder next to my bed so I could wake up and sing the melody so I could work on it later. Except I pretty much got the vocal equivalent of your handwriting… gravelly monotone sleep voice
I used to do this in college when I was a psychology major and reading Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams. It’s kinda fun. Use a flair pen, rather than a ballpoint, because it’s easier to write with while you’re half asleep. The unreadable handwriting, of course, is a separate issue. Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode (as many things do), where Jerry wakes up in the middle of the night, laughing while half asleep, and thinking that he just had a brainstorm for a HILARIOUS joke….writes it down….and of course, cannot decipher what he wrote in the morning.
In a way, it kind of ruins dreaming when you know you can control everything. But I’ve found it helps with problems with nightmares. (Also, “Superman” dreams are fun!)
