Reminds me of the rumor of how Old Man Muntz built his TVs. He would design and build a set from a perfect engineering standpoint. The he would start taking out components until it failed. He would then put the last component back, and sell the set.
Years ago my parents bought the extended warranty on their small TV with the built in VCR. I told them that they were wasting their money. The day after the extended warranty took effect, the TV/VCR broke and they were able to get it repaired for nothing.
I still think extended warranties are a waste of money, but sometimes you get “lucky”.
Many years ago when the extended warranty was a new thing I went to go buy a 27" (huge at that time) TV that was on sale. The salesman was really trying to sell me on the warranty but I wasnt having it. We go to write out the sales ticket and he picks up a stack of paper and glances thru them and asks one last time “Are you sure you dont want the warranty? These are repair orders for that set”. I replied “well you’ve convinced me”. His eyes lit up as he says “Let me just add that to the ticket”. Me? “No, you convinced me I dont want to buy a TV here”, turned around and left!
