My first girl friend had a Siamese cat that had nothing to do with me until it realized I was allergic to cats. Then it would sit on my chest as if it was saying “Breathe”. By that time I had developed an immunity to that particular cat. I don’t know if the cat ever realized that.
When I was single, my tiny 7 pound calico was fairly apathetic to people and generally behaved one of two ways the first time she would meet a person. Micki would always come up to them and look them up and down. She would go off into a corner, always in the same room as me, and take a nap if she deemed the person ok. If she didn’t deem someone to be worthy, she would stand up, turn her back on the person, and stalk out of the room in disgust. I soon learned her instincts regarding people were far better than mine so any time I was asked out, I would tell the guy I could go out with him only if my cat approved. That certainly got rid of suitors! :-) When my now husband came to my house for the first time, Micki jumped on his lap and fell asleep (I do think the black suit he was wearing had something to do with it though).

Cats seem to realize that they’re in the driver’s seat for as long as it amuses us. Size, after all, does matter.
