Back in the day, we had TWO holidays in February – Washington’s birthday, and Lincoln’s birthday – and we had both days off. Then every class had a party on Valentine’s day – so we did a whole lot of celebrating every February. For Valentine’s Day, we would make valentine boxes and we would make the Valentine cards we were going to give to classmates. Parents would come in and bring goodies – like doughnuts, cookies and punch. The parents would play the piano and lead us in singing – mostly sogs about spring coming. On Ground Hog’s Day – which is coming up on February 2 – there would be someone like a magician or someone else who had some kind of act – would come in and there would be a whole school assembly in the gym. The kids would sit down on the gym floor and the person with the act would make his or her presentation. One year, there was a guy with trained dogs – which did a lot of tricks. On another year, there was a guy who did rope tricks. But it’s really great that Go Comics managed to remember that, in the olden days, nearly all of the comic strips celebrated holidays.
Today’s classic is dated February 22 1950 and I see that it first appeared on Go Comics in 2017. The current Red and Rover story arc is also a reprint from 2017.
In the 8th grade I forgot to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. I got a few light playful pinches, but there was this one mean ässhole who used it as an excuse to inflict real pain. In revenge I gave him the wrong answers when he tried to crib off my test sheet.
