As far as I can tell there seems to have been a food hoarding “moment” in the summer of 1950 in the US. The New York Times ran a story that July about sugar hoarding being especially prominent.
I wonder if Aunt Fritzi is aware that Nancy is subject to these calls when she sends Nancy to get the groceries…
