I think there’s been a slight miscalculation in his market survey. “Manly men” carry the kid by leaving it to the wife or older kid. Less bother, less cost, “not my fault” if something goes sideways.
On the other hand, I was quite fond of the baby backpack. Kid could look over my shoulder (either one) or nap, his preference. And there was a “water”-proof panel in front of the kid and behind me. True, it wasn’t good until he could easily hold up his head. One of my favorite memories was when he was 2-ish and we were walking along a cut in the side of the hill, with him in his pack. I spotted some huckleberries and started to pick them, intending to share. But when I looked up, he was reaching over me to the higher berries and picking for himself.
