Well Alexander wasn’t so great. His plans weren’t well thought of and he had to go back after failing to establish a stronghold in India. Even though he managed to beat one Indian king in the northwest, he could never make a successful campaign against the rest of the subcontinent and he went back with whatever was left of a tired and defeated army. He never even made it back to Macedonia and died somewhere in Babylon.
(Noticing how the slope follows the mood of the piece.) Even if you only conquered the known world once, I think that entitles you to be called “GREAT” the rest of your life.
Alexander was supposedly murdered by one of his top generals because his arrogance exceeded the numbers in his army which he was depleting pretty dang fast. Poisoned river water in his booze is considered the murder weapon, these days.
I have a half-memory of a Monty Python bit (I don’t think it was a full-blown skit) about “St James the Lesser” and “St James the Least of All”

And then there was Alexander the Great’s son: Alexander the Mediocre.

Don’t buy your house; that way you can call yourself “The Lessor” and take off the pressure.

I don’t know. If you’re a tyrant, people tend not to be that honest with you.

All said and done, Alex the great had an enormous cod piece! I know because I’ve seen his portraits! :>)
