Iā€™ve actually used the term semi-automatic to refer to my carā€™s transmissionā€™s ā€œsport shiftā€ mode. You have to move the lever to change gears, but thereā€™s no clutch.

The PowerFlite automatic transmissions in Plymouths of that vintage only had 2 forward speeds. My grandfather owned one. The shift lever was on the dashboard instead of on the steering column. Right after that they came up with the pushbutton shifter (also on the dashboard).

Sounds just like a ā€˜56 Plymouth. Wasnā€™t that the era of push-button transmission, as I seem to recall from my adventures in a similar vehicle?

    I learned to drive in a ā€™52 Plymouth with ā€œFluid Driveā€, I think it was also called a ā€œsemi-automaticā€ā€¦

Itā€™s ā€œsemiā€-automatic. Itā€™s an automatic that was taken from an 18-wheeler.
