My dad had a knack for playful repurposing. For example, he had a 40’ boom crane truck. He parked it on the hill over our yard, fully extended it, and we took the board seat off of the swing and we had an industrial-sized swing.
Gee, my dad would say "Hmm, let’s see what could go wrong… " and not sugarcoat it. I added a small amount of sugar with the kids I raised but still gave ‘em a good dose of "here’s what could happen and you’d be responsible for…" They never seemed to suffer from lack of fun things to do and still came out intact.
One thing I really appreciated about my parents – if they PROMISED we would do something, we did it. If they didn’t promise, it could go either way – depending on the circumstances. VERY seldom did they promise anything, but boy we sure tried to get that sublime phrase added to their “yes”. About the only way it wouldn’t happen is if one of us had to go to the hospital. Then it would just get postponed. I can’t remember them ever breaking one of their promises.

Young pluggers come from mixed marriages, or are adopted. And their dads give them false hope, but they’re used to it.

To go from a “Maybe” to a “Yes” will require more information . You know the old … Who, What, When, Where and How ;-)

I left my children in no doubt. My answer was invariably “Sure! On the day you turn 105.”

My parents never did the maybe thing….It was like Judge Wopner…..Yes or now…Right then …right there…. with no appeal process.

Reality translation – no. Same with “we’ll see”. The escape for disappointing the little tyke and getting them PO’d at you, “Go ask your Gammy.”
