I remember once reading about a family who put up so many Christmas lights that the nearby airport had to tell them to tone it down. They were in the approach path.
For many years there was a huge display visible from the north approach to SeaTac airport. Taxi drivers would get asked to drive fares past the display on their way into Seattle. It was truly magnificent — but, even though there was a donation bucket outside the display, it proved too costly for the homeowners to keep up. They retired it about 20 years ago.
Unfortunately or not, as the case may be, house opposite ours, and side yard neighbors have strung lights, lots of lights. Already have more than enough 3am reading light from high wattage garage and porch lights that have no shades. Now it will be multicolored. Gonna be a l-o-o-o-n-g month. But t’is the season for . . . your choice.
On Lake Shore Blvd. in Gross Pointe there was house that each year added more lights — first just the outline of the house, then a layer on the lawn and all the shrubs, then a herd of glowing deer, then all the tree trunks and branches wrapped in lights, then the house next door. You could read a newspaper by them, and I am sure they could be seen across the lake into Canada. Cars would line up and slowly cruise by. Then one year nothing. I miss it. But I don’t live in the neighborhood either.

I can’t believe Calvinhead is actually hanging out with an adult. It’s quite rare.

I have never put up outside lights in the 44 years we’ve lived here. Neither the horses, the elk, deer or moose care to see them.

Nah, it was the Health Department. Too many folks were getting blinded by the unexpected high intensity flash.
