When I was a kid we used to go camping during the summer in northern Wisconsin. That usually included at least one trip to a local dump. We would get there around twilight, then sit until it was dark (except for the light from a full or near full moon) and watch the bears come around to scavenge.

Used to be fun down in the dumps but there are so many rules about not taking anything cool you find back out.

Is “the dumps” still colloquial for garbage dump & landfill? I understand Gunther, but I wonder if it’s a regionalism?
