Oh, those double standards!

Just realized that Kevin and his sister have magic eyebrows

This was my mom with me and my older brother. If I got a B- she was “disappointed”. As long as my brother wasn’t failing, she didn’t care how well he did.

Miles has been having a good influence on Kevin’s study habits!

Krystal, it’s ok. Mom spit in Kevin’s cake, just to even things out.

My pop always expected us to get straight As.

This is a variation of the prodigal son scenario. It’s not fun to be the child who is always assumed will overachieve and be responsible. Especially when your parents metaphorically kill the fatted calf for a feast every time your sibling meets lower expectations or doesn’t do something to get in trouble. But, as get older you start to understand your parents had different standards because you and your sibling were different people.

And here are you diplomas of participation with blue ribbons on each!

Reminded of a parable the author of the anonymous gospel we call Matthew put in the mouth of Jesus, chapter 20. Guy with a large farm needs to get crop in, so he hires a bunch of field hands at the break of day, and promises them a fair wage for the day. He goes back into town a couple times later in day and gets more field hands. End of day, he pays the people who only worked a fraction of the time the same fair wage for the day. Those hired first complain – thinking they deserved a bonus. “Hey, if I chose to be generous, how does that hurt you?” replies the farm owner. Of course, according to the book of Acts, the early church practiced socialism.

As a teacher I’ve seen a lot of kids that a C was realistically all they could hope to get grade wise. Others, an A was achieved without even trying. To be honest, I’ve always had a lot more respect for the student who struggled and worked to get that C or B than I did for the A student who only hit a half lick at it. And yes, I’ve told students that.

(For the record, I am against most participation trophies as well). ;)

Just wait until you grow up and lead a team at work, Krystal.

Judging from her sigh, Kevin has a record of doing quite poorly in school while Krystal has a straight A record. Their mom decides to celebrate both Kevin’s remarkable improvement and Krystals great grades.

I know the message of rewarding kids for doing their best—and perhaps this is Kevin’s best… but it’s not the first time that I’ve seen men’s mediocrity paired with women’s excellence and rewarded the same.

I didn’t read in the comic that AT ALL…

I can see why his mom is happy about a C Average…go to July 1 2019 (this is not a scavenger hunt).

Also, Krystal’s hair is more wavy and less squiggly now, and Bondia I think removed the lighter colored hair in the middle.
