I’m with Spud. Years ago I used to occasionally park across the street from a friend’s house. Then one day the spot was roped off and there was a big hole. The friend said it just collapsed overnight.
Going from what I personally know about sinkholes, I doubt Spud would ever encounter one deep enough where a parachute would even have a chance to be effective in slowing his fall.
But then Spud’s also the sort of kid who’d manage to prove me wrong somehow, so…
In 1986 in Columbus OH a lawyer driving his Mercedes down Broad Street plummeted into the Earth as a new sinkhole opened up under his car. Actually he plummeted 26 feet into the sewer.

Santa didn’t come through with the USGS 3 meter sq resolution soil and geological composition map?

I’d go for a bungee cord. If the parachute opens in time, you still have to get back up.

Even with static line you got to go a long way before canopy opens.

A parachute won’t help against the Spud-eating monster at the bottom..!

Spud has a new phobia for the new year.

My phobia is sidewalk grates. Don’t trust them. Just my luck I’d walk on the rusty one and crash down.

I always love how Wallace’s arms are out in a heroic pose as he walks. Every step is an adventure!

I worry more about the clowns in the sewer drains with the red balloons. I really love a big, plump red balloon.

I live in daily fear of walking across a sink-hole above a hair-trigger covering of earth…

And now you’ve given Wallace the idea to go spelunking.
