Father, why does the church pose Dungeons and Dragons? It's all pretend. There's no chance of us actually becoming murderers or witches! What? Oh, son, that'd be crazy. We don't oppose Dungeons and Dragons for those reasons. Then why? Let me show you my handy set diagram. Forms of birth control D&D

Does the church (I’m assuming this means the Catholic church) actually oppose Dungeons and Dragons? I mean, I suppose I could look it up…
Not important. I’m not a Catholic, and have no interest in D&D.

D&D was controversial in the early 1980s, when the game was in its heyday. Critics accused it of leading children into Satanism and suicide. It all blew over when a study came out showing that D&D players were less likely to commit suicide than cheerleaders were.
So parents, if you want your children to survive their teenage years, don’t let them become cheerleaders.
I kid. The controversy went away because children started playing video games instead. So critics accused them of fostering violence in young people.

The real reason is that they don’t want kids to think of the supernatural as fiction. Once they realize that ghosts and goblins only exist in the imagination, they might start to question the existence of you-know-who. Then the clergy would lose their power and have to get real jobs.

The church is more concerned if you masturbate than they are if you are raped by a priest, bishop, cardinal, pope or nun.
