I’ve seen this joke taken up a notch in a Mutt ‘n’ Jeff comic book. Jeff painted the car like this, for the same reason, and he and Mutt went out for a drive. They get in an accident – of course – and in the last panel watch the car being engulfed in flames, hoping there’s at least one piece left intact to confuse people.
