The nearest thing to time travel if you’re on the east coast is to call someone on the west coast. A little after midnight this Jan. 1st, I called friends in CA telling them I was calling from the future year of 2021.
Ten or fifteen years ago I was tasked with snow-catting a line crew around in the woods east of Flagstaff, working to restore power late one night after a big storm. It took a couple hours picking our way through the woods to find a broken crossarm that shorted two of the phases together. The crew replaced the crossarm and, sometime after 1:00 a.m., told their mates to try to energize it. A quarter mile away we saw a lone house in the forest light up and I knew it was just one of many. It was then I understood why the linemen thought of it as a sacred calling. They had the sort of power the ancients ascribed to gods: the power to bring warmth and light.
The power was out in the last few strips so turning on the lights, adjusting the heat, watching tv and folding clothes after they have been in the dryer is back to normal.

I have a Bose radio w/CD changer. When the power comes back on it goes through all the CDs, spitting them out and sucking them back in. Quit comical.

Jimmy, you nailed it! From a world lit only by fire . . . to the dazzle and ease of power at our fingertips.

That’s a wonderful feeling when the power comes back on!
