I hate to break this to you Lio, but you’ll just get stung by hornets right on the other side of that gate. You have to get all the way to Circle 6 for some fire. Give Farinata a marshmallow for me.
It has nothing to do with Jews, it’s your welcome to hell sign and the vacation hot spot right now as it’s the only place you can warm your buns right now.
I’m not sure why some posters are thinking that the “Abandon hope…” saying is from a concentration camp. I never heard of one with that saying when I took German history. As Wlly Blly and Durak mentioned, the saying “Arbeit macht frei” was above the camps. Here’s a brief snippet from an article in the online “The Wire” mentioning that in relation to Dachau: the camp’s logo – Arbeit Macht Frei (‘Work makes you free’) – emblazoned on the main prisoner gate, that greeted the hapless inmates of most other camps also with the same macabre relish.

Lasciate ogni speranza voi ch′entrate. I think it translates as “Abandon hope all ye who enter”, not “Abandon all hope ye who enter here”.
