Rover: “Charlie Brown’s not real” Um Um Rover… Earth to comic strip character Rover… bad news…. real bad news… “You’ve drawn yourself to a sad conclusion”
It’s so very real to me! It is a spot on depiction of my boyhood life with my Bassett Hound, Claude, in the 60’s and 70’s. Ice cream trucks, Estes rockets, school buses, BB guns, and Charlie Brown Christmas Special. Yes folks, that was so real and fortunately I lived it. Thanks Brian!!!
When I was growing up, we had a smart medium-sized dog (just under knee-high to a grown-up, or thereabouts.) My mom had her hands full wrangling two teenagers and two toddlers, so the dog would help her out a little. He would pick up his empty food bowl or water bowl and bring it to her when he needed a refill. As a little kid, I learned to carry the water to the dog bowl in a large cup and fill it in place, instead of filling the bowl and trying to carry it. His was a wide, flat bowl.

So Peanuts is less real than Red and Rover…
Does anyone have a source for newspaper comic lore?

Not sure if that is a logical reply…given the circumstances.

Like thejanith, we had a dog who reminded us it was dinner time by getting an empty can (dog food, of course) from the garbage and bringing it to us.
