I remember reciting the pledge of allegiance as a kid. I still remember the words to this day. Didn’t think much of it though until years later what it meant.
I pledge impertinence to the flag waving, of the unindicted co-conspirators of America, and to the republicans for which I can’t stand, one abomination, underhanded fraud, indefensible, with Liberty and Justice.. Forget it.
Francis Bellamy, the guy who came up with the pledge, also suggested it be accompanied by a salute:“[E]very pupil gives the flag the military salute – right hand lifted, palm downward, to align with the forehead and close to it. Standing thus, all repeat together, slowly, ‘I pledge allegiance to my Flag…’ At the words, ‘to my Flag,’ the right hand is extended gracefully, palm upward, toward the Flag, and remains in this gesture till the end of the affirmation; whereupon all hands immediately drop to the side.”
Then the fascists introduced their signature salute and in 1942 congress changed the recommended american salute to hand-over-heart followed by an arm extension with palm up. a few months later it jettisoned the extension altogether.
And you wonder why they can survive with that egotistical narcissism that is chronic. I thik it is because of that very shield of boringness that protects them. Unicorns weren’t always like that, they had to survive and kill hunters who spent their lives going after unicorns. The ones before would have a hard time living with them. But now most of them are fine.

The 1952 addition of “under a horn” remains controversial.

I wonder if Marigold had heard something similar to her pledge a few decades ago and that her subconscious has been playing with it ever since.

That applies to everyone, or no one. Even weirdos like Dakota.

Is it even possible not to have an allegiance to oneself?
