We have three cats, and three litter boxes—one in each bathroom and half bath. And with the flushable clumping litter we use, we don’t have to do that nasty clean out chore, and the cats always have at least two loos available at any time.
Had way too much to do yesterday. Didn’t have a bit of time to even read anything here. You need another kitty litter box when you clean out the other box.
This cats tendency is immediately use a clean litter box reminds me of a story. I used to use a roto-tiller to hoe my parents vegtable garden and after the soil was freshly turned the local feral cats would litterally run to the fresh soil and “do their business.”

Cats are very picky about their litter box. If the box is not clean, the cat will find some other place to use.

Don’t cats put themselves in their own version of Time Out for about 17 hours every day?

They are curious ~ especially when you are messing around with their stuff.

I always have and audience when I clean out the litter boxes. My cats make sure to, christen the boxes about 15 seconds after I am done cleaning them!

Big Blue follows me around when I’m cleaning the litter boxes and has to contribute something to at least one of them right away
I make sure to thank him

They’re only indifferent when you don’t want them to be.
