Trees may be regenerated. Petroleum/fossil fuel does its dirty work then vanishes. Which, considering what hundreds of years more of using it would do …
People who champion “save the trees” are ignorant to the practice that many places now “farm” trees. The trees are treated like a crop in that the seedlings are planted and, after so many years are thinned out with the trees removed being used as pulp wood. A set number of years later the trees are thinned out further for more pulp wood. The last round is used to harvest the mature trees for lumber and the ground re-seeded with more seedlings.
If you do your research on Plastic recycling, very little of the plastics that are collected in recycling bins are actually recycled. Previously it was shipped to Asia, but today no countries want it. About the only things actually recycled are Aluminum, steel, and glass, with glass slowly being less and less recycled.

I detest paper straws. I like A&W but I’ve started going elsewhere just because of their straws.

We have a few local shops that are using bamboo straws that are re-usable.

In this way, trees are a renewable resource.

I’m all for the pulp non-fiction paper route and rather not be involved in the creation of more unrecycled plastics.
