Bioluminescence is actually very common in the deep sea. Most fish can’t see red light, so some predators specifically emit red light to invisibly find prey, and some Bigger predators have evolved to reflect red light on small parts of their body to lure in prey. What a nasty place to live.
Good thing for the penguin there are no land predators there. He wouldn’t last week. Might make an easy target in the ocean.
We lived a rural area for many years and brown thrashers were plentiful in summer and fall. Moved to heavily forested suburbs but have seen only one thrasher in the last few years. Also miss other species such as osprey, indigo bunting [rare sightings at night], and others. But we have lots of small birds and two hawks who frequently graze for slugs and worms in newly cut grass. So we found a different mix, all fun to watch.

Alas, it turns out that the yellow penguin had been the victim of some serious bullying…

Considering the brown thrasher is related to the mockingbird this item is not exactly earth shattering.

Ornithologist: Well that makes 7867 distinct sounds so far. Although, number 5789 sounded very similar to 6972, as I seem to recall.

Yeah -about that yellow penguin. There is reason he isn’t around anymore. We don’t much care for non-conformists in our community… :-O
