I had one cat who would sleep in the absolute middle of the bed. There was only one who could be trusted under the covers on the coldest nights. With my current cats, one likes to sleep on a chair or bureau nearby but the other is just fine on a heated bed in another room. I do recommend those 4-watt cat bed heaters, if cats are disrupting your sleep just trying to get warm.
