If her friend there doesn’t explain it, she’s not much of a friend. She’s already got one strike against her, for thinking he’s lying to her right off the bat… (thank goodness this is just a joke and not Mary Worth, where we have to take everything so seriously.)
True story. A mechanic once told me of a woman who wanted the air changed in her tire. He asked if she actually just wanted him to check the air pressure and add if necessary. Nope, she insisted that she need new air in the tires, like the other place used to do. He explained that it wasn’t necessary to change the air in the tires, just the air pressure.
She was so insistent that he finally gave up. Put the car on a lift, let the air out and reinflated the tires.
When she asked how much, he said it was free today.
He had to wonder if she was just confused or if some unscrupulous mechanic was actually charging people to change the air in their tires.
He was a rarity, an honest mechanic. Sadly, when he left that shop, the owners wouldn’t tell me where he went. And yeah, his replacement was a bit less honest. Haven’t been there in years.
