F. Gwynplaine MacIntyre’s life echoes the fictional Oliver Twist and the legendary Dick Whittington. Bought, stolen or abandoned, he was raised in the outback of Australia by Scottish immigrants who worked as migrant laborers in cattle and sheep stations. Neither nurturing nor kindly, they sometimes exhibited him at country fairs as the Frog Boy. He had webbed fingers and toes along with other genetic oddities, and bowed legs from severe rickets. He still cheerfully answers to “Froggy”, though officially he has chosen “Fergus” as a first name.
