I plugged nattevingerwerk into google translation. It is a Dutch word. Then I looked it up and found this:

Something that is done without much precision or base in anything, like wetting your finger and sticking it in the air to feel which direction the wind is coming from.

“Proberen voorspellen wanneer de Coronacrisis over is blijft tot nu toe nattevingerwerk.”

“Trying to predict when the Corona crisis will be over still remains wet finger work.”

I’m guessing that Corona is referring to COVID-19. Who calls it Corona?

I used to have a pretty old vintage typewriter. I can’t remember now what happened to it. I think Teresa took it and put it here.

Who is Nat Tevinger and why can’t he spell? Did he get his G.E.D. from the Bath Mat Factory company school?

Is it a wise or a too-easily-influenced person who tests the direction of the wind? Inquiring minds, you know.

    …finally…

    …a photo Mz. Burritt?…

    …Hemingway is overrated…

    …O. Henry- under…

…wet finger work sounds like it should bring a smile to your face…

    …but to your finger?…

    …[all together, now:]…

SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE, THAT’S NOT MY FINGER, EITHER!

…I was going to say something else…

    …but I can’t quite put my finger on it…

Wet or not, that’s a very smug -looking finger, and probably very naughty, at that!

I think your imaginations are good for the rest of the story. And the olde timey manual typewriter is just there to distract those too young for wet and dirty fingers.

Nobody better lay a finger on my Butterfinger (obvious euphemism)!

Da Blog: Watched Fred Gwynne bio … interesting to note that Gwynne’s mother created the cartoon character Sunny Jim in 1902 that graced the boxes of a cereal called Force …!
