At least we can be safe in the thought that if they possessed that sort of technology and had not used it to kill each other, like some species do, they would have to be peaceful if they showed up.
I used to doubt they visit because having that much technology would mean there’s nothing here for them. But if they’ve been gathering intel on us and looking at how the USA treated indigenous people… they may just decide its time to do the same to all of us.
This always is predicated on the idea that distance represents the same problem for aliens that it does for us. If distance meant the same thing for aliens that distances does in Star Wars for an example – then they could simply be coming here to visit relatives in Switzerland to pick up excellent chocolate and Swiss Army knives. – Credit to Scott Adams.
At least it wouldn’t be for our ‘natural resources’, you’ve got more water, minerals, metals and so on in the asteroids than on any planet. Why bother going to a place that is hostile to you when you can just happily plug any asteroid at home?

Every idea I have of the reasons that aliens may be visiting us scares me.

“Mr. President, the aliens have landed. I have good news and bad news,”
“What’s the good news, General?”
“They want to give us unlimited clean energy, faster-than-light travel, and the cures for all diseases.”
“What’s the bad news?”
“They also want to give us their religion.”
“We’re screwed…”

Lately I find that pessimism and realism have become synonyms.
