In New Mexico it might qualify as a Murder Hornet.

I’ve got a big hornet nest right next to my door. They’ve never done anything aggressive, but they do sometimes spread their wings as a warning gesture. I try to tell them that we both live here, so we ought to get along, but they don’t listen.

The great and powerful Andre turns out to have feet of clay; Dill angrily assumes his real place in this drama as truth teller; Alice is still smitten and Petey has determined hurrying home is the better part of valor.

Notice just how happy Alice is right now. Rare does that happen. André’s sudden shock at the size of the queen wasp fits right in with Alice’s happy tittering.

André’s design is definitely influenced by WTWTA.

Wasps and hornets are such beautiful compact creatures. Carnivorous hunters.

Right now over the past 10 years with weaker winters wasps are surviving them and building permanent giant nests now 7’ – 9’ wide, who needs Japanese hornets when we have that?

Usually stuff gets smaller as you get older. Wasps have always seemed to just keep getting bigger.

That looks like a mud dauber… they don’t even sting. Of course the kids wouldn’t know that, but I wonder if it was done on purpose.

Looks like Andre “the Giant” Chang (a.k.a. the guy inspired by Where the Wild Things Are) has met his match in the orangutan-sized wasp! Alice blithely giggles her way through the encounter, while jealous Dill hangs by to witness the outcome (and maybe gloat, if Andre goes down to defeat).

    It’s a cliffhanger for sure (anyway, a manhole-cover-hanger)….
