The shape reminds me of a type of merry-go-round that used to be. It was shaped much like this and you were supposed to ride on it standing up in indentations on the outside of the dome. There were handles to hold on to and a small platform for each rider. As kids, one of us would often climb up to the top and ride it for awhile up there.
