Bowlines are extremely important to rock climbers. In our annual classes, the final test would be asking the student to tie a bowline while standing in a cold shower. Not too harsh when your life (and your partner’s) might depend on a good knot.
I commented to my sister’s husband, a Boatswains Mate (they’re supposed to be the knot experts in the Navy) that a bowline is a good rescue knot. He smugly told me that it was a slipknot.

I was taught that stupid mnemonic and could never tie the knot until I ditched it. Once I concentrated on the knot it was easy.
