Supposedly someone from the 70’s will still occasionally find their way out of one of those things. I understand they tend to be able to survive on all the crumbs that get stuck in there.
I recently read online about the “quicksand meme”. When I was a kid, there was nowhere a cowboy, a jungle hunter or a soldier could go in a movie or on TV without the danger of quicksand turning up somewhere. True quicksand turned out to be relatively rare and other memes were more exciting to the audience. In the black and white movies and TV shows they used a water slurry of raw oatmeal for quicksand.

In the UK “shag” has a different meaning. It is more like what one does on the carpet (or wherever one happens to be).
