In one of Jonathan Swiftâs books, the defense lawyers suffered the same fate as their clients if found guilty. Needless to say, they were quite careful about who they chose to defend.
Itâs how the justice system works in The US. EVERYONE is entitled to a defense. Of course it doesnât mean you get the best one if youâre not rich.
We protect the rights of the guilty, in order to ensure the rights of the innocent. The purpose of Due Process is to make sure that someone is actually guilty (and that the punishment will fit the crime), not just that we think theyâre guilty, or want them to be guilty. If the âguiltyâ can be railroaded, whatâs to keep the innocent from joining them?
