I remember when my daughter was little she just had to have a drink before bed. At first she would try to sip it little by little to take as long as possible. I quickly put an end to that LOL
We told our kids to go to bed and be quiet. We did not tell them that they had to go to sleep. If they wanted to read a book or play with a toy quietly, they were welcome to it. Usually, they were asleep within 5 minutes.
I had a dog Clementine (2001-2016) that felt slighted when the human grandkids got stories at bedtime and she didn’t. So I started reading to her at bedtime. She seemed to appreciate it greatly for a time, but after the grandkids and their parents moved out, her interest waned, and she started crawling under the bed and nodding off immediately after I began reading.

My furkids get their own drinks, then jump in bed with us. It’s why we have a split king bed.
