Wow… haven’t thought about doing that in years. It was one of two ways my dad watered the yard. The other was to wrap the end in a burlap bag (remember those?) and put the water on trickle for hours. (he’d move it occasionally)
Garden hose water is highly toxic-including BPAs and lead and is not potable for humans or pets. And I doubt it was any better in the good old days when just about everything continued lead and asbestos.

Put thumb partly over the the opening to your drinking fountain.
Shut fountain/sprayer off with a kink.

On the farm with a deep well the water eventually got to cold to do it very long.

We’re remodeling and workmen are in and out for several weeks. Every night my wife complains about spraying in our bathroom.

Much more satisfying to use the thumb, especially latter in the season.. the water is pretty cold in the spring.
