I realize my name problems are nowhere near Huda’s, but the thing I experience is that strangers always seem to spell my name right, like for example when I give a name for a takeout order. But on the other hand, almost all my acquaintances spell it wrong. Even my grandmother (who was the first to suggest my name to my parents) can never seem to get it right! Anyway, I’m genuinely impressed with all the patience Huda has had, because I don’t think I could stand it.
My name isn’t uncommon, but my parents chose the French spelling. (For no reason; we have no French ancestry, nobody in my family has the name, etc) I’m ok with people misspelling it when they’ve only heard it, but I’ve had it misspelled when I’ve s-l-o-w-l-y spelled it out. Gr. I’ve also had people mispronounce it, which doesn’t make any sense to me, as it’s pronounced as it’s spelled! But, at least I don’t get the “where are you from?”/“what language is that?”, that I’m sure Huda has had to endure!

I just give out any name I feel like giving at that moment in time. If they ask how to spell it, I reply, “I-T”.
