Spiders are our friends, even if they look and sometimes act strangely. [Spiders can’t turn their heads to see things. They have to turn their whole bodies which makes them look very aggressive as they twist and turn.] Tarantulas and wolf spiders give some people the creeps because of their large, hairy bodies and legs. But they are harmless to humans (except for a painful bite), and their mild venom is weaker than a typical bee’s. [Wash the site, apply cool compress, use a topical cortisone cream (e.g., Benydryl).] Both are timid unless cornered, preferring to retreat. They generally live and hunt alone. They do not spin webs. They eat insects, small reptiles and amphibians, and the largest tarantulas may also feast on field mice. If you find either one in your house, trap it in a jar or butterfly net and let it go outside — it will help keep your yard and garden free of pests.
