Reminds me of a Steven Wright joke - “I have a map of the United States. It’s actual size. The scale says ‘one mile = one mile.’ When people ask where I live, I say, ‘B4.’ ”
It’s impressive that Calvin has studied an atlas, most kids when asked to identify the locations of other countries usually put them in the silliest of places and not always as countries. Sigh.
<<Hopes he made no spelling or punctuation mistakes, but is too lazy to check!
Comics can be (not always) the most pertinent commentary on contemporary society. They deserve the comments of the readers. I get a lot out of some comments.
Judging from the swirling clouds in panel 2 it looks like typhoon season in the lower latitudes. Hope they don’t run into turbulence after reentry. Actually, hope they get through reentry. Hobbs might get his fur singed.
I bet there’s more than one purple country in the atlas – er, world. If he gets the wrong one, he’ll have to spend another whole week trying to get home!
lol - me too. I was disappointed when there was no think black line, just a road sign saying “Now entering Oklahoma” Hope C&H can find the right ‘box’ to land in.
You can tell that this is an old comic because the United States is still a nice blended shade of PURPLE. Since then, the purple has fractured into REDs and BLUEs.
Not just kids…even adults place Rome in Venezuela. I’ve heard that in the US, the majority of people can’t identify “England” on a map of the world – because it’s been renamed the “UK”. Geography should be a required high school class again.

It’s Funk & Wagnall’s! Maybe that’s why you are still looking for it, unless you are using a play-on-words I didn’t get. :o)
Are you new, here? There seem to be several, today.
By the way, apparently Calvin uses Funk & ‘Wagon’all’s!
“A picture is worth a thousand words”.
Sometimes a few words are worth little or nothing.
It depends on the content, and how the words are written.
Cogent Modality counts for much. By the way, I like that name.
“There’s Something About that Name.”
Didn’t Tom Sawyer go up in a hot air balloon and expect to see the states with their distinct borders and the colors they were on the map at the front of every elementary classroom?
I’m with Stede_Bonnet, too… not that that has anything to do with this strip… just saying.
I usually enjoy the comments, too, although I rarely leave one…

How would you know BtBGuy? That was your first comment too. Sometimes the comments are about each other… it helps to be funny.

“By the giant letter E” would place Calvin’s house somewhere in central Kentucky. And here I’d always thought his family were Yankees!

MorganZ about 15 years ago
There’s a “W” in “States” ?
Rakkav about 15 years ago
Maybe in one of the fifty United States, perhaps Washington or Wyoming.
I guess they had better trust the wagon! :))

They have to trust the wagon’s UPS!! (Universe Positioning System)! :)

Going even smaller - the first time I traveled out of state as a kid, I really expected an obvious border or even a entirely different look!

In my Atlas, Elbonia is also purple. Hope you brought turbans, guys. Lower Slobbovia, is purple, too. Fortunately, Hobbes has a fur coat.

This is nothing. Check out Pibgorn; 300+ comments is not unusual.

So what you’re saying is that we Humans have more than one way of royally messing things up.
Calvin was trying to flee from more than he realized.

midiranger, there was a Sniglet years ago for Gapiana, the area between the “You are now leaving” and the “Welcome to” signs for the states.

Isn’t amazing how much Bill W. manages to say in only a few tiny frames?
Proof that “more words” does not equal “better”.
