One of the reasons I divorced Spouse-the-practice-case was because I didn’t WANT to lie to her, but that was the only way to maintain the peace. Though the better analogy was that I had to create and maintain a non-me persona for her to deal with, and it was a life of walking on eggshells, and NEVER having an open conversation about goals or desires. (I get squeebles just writing about it 30+ years later, though they’re not as painful as they used to be.)
