Reminds me of a recent stunt performed by our IT department. It sent out a mass e-mail telling us that it was “Security Week” and that we were required to watch a video they had found and provided a link to… as usual I checked the link’s URL and the e-mail’s sender address, and they checked out fine (per the instructions that IT had given us in the past) so I dutifully clicked on it…
The video started out by chiding me for clicking on it – that I had been spammed. Then it gave me a list of instructions to avoid spam – all of which I had performed on this e-mail already. Their instructions ended with a suggestion that I set up a filter to automatically send e-mails from offending addresses to the Junk folder… and never open them again…
So, again following their instructions, I set up a filter to send all e-mails from our IT to a Junk folder, where I ignore them and eventually the system automatically deletes them…
A buddy who works in IT asked me why I hadn’t responded to several e-mails that IT had sent to me since then – I explained how I followed their instructions for filtering out spam sources…
