I have never been a gamer, though I hang with some of them, sometimes… and when I have tried to understand their motivation for using cheat codes, I universally get blank looks full of “What are you TALKING about?” As far as I can tell, gamers have a short circuit in their brains that allows them to cheat ON GAMES ONLY without any qualm. I don’t get it: If you enjoy the game, then why cheat? … And if you aren’t enjoying it because you’re not winning, then why play?
In Civilization II, one could plant a new city next to an enemy city, and then build a settler (or engineer) before it grew to size 2. The new city would vanish and the resulting settler (or engineer) needed no resources. My dad called them “licensed engineers”. When establishing an embassy in the enemy city, he would rename it to a famous university.
The other day, I learned that people used to call glasses “cheaters,” as if there were a rule against enhancing your vision by unnatural means. By that standard, all tool use is cheating.

I knew a guy who once said that if you can do it without hacking the game, it isn’t cheating. But what counts as a hack?

Ahh the “Konami code”. What bittersweet joy it brings. Although I do prefer “Castlevania” the most.

It’s really not cheating. It’s changing the conditions of the game:-D.

At least in those days you didn’t pay extra money to literally get ahead in the game! ;/

Just think of it as the Kobayashi Maru scenario with the James Kirk variation.

I have the Game Boy Advance game based upon the 2003 TV series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; the code set it to very hard mode.

It’s not cheating, it’s just a genie for games… it’s basically just a unicorn. ;)

Left, Right, Left, Right, Up (3x), Fruit…I mean Fire (button). Similar code exists for unlocking levels in PMW3.

Can you cheat by making a game harder and still come out with more score? I can in Pac-Mania’s settings mode.
