I have a scratching pad for my cats that they love. No scratched furniture or carpet at all now. It lies flat on the floor and is catnip impregnated.

Oogie almost reminds me of Fat Freddy’s Cat.
Our cat has never scratched our furniture because when he first did it, I let him know, with my voice, it was a big no-no.
