Almost nothing is a lot more than absolutely nothing, so there must be some reason people spend almost nothing to produce it. That reason is that there are people out there gullible enough to believe it.
Given what I’ve seen of conspiracy theories, I can believe there are people out there like that: “It’s too good to believe, so it must be true.”
