Yes, as it should be. It would be nice, however, if they didn’t keep moving closer and closer taking more and more of your space until all you have is 6 inches and no blanket.
Well, some did, some didn’t. I think some people going as far back as the beginning of domesticated dogs & right up to present time have always let them share their shelter.
Gramps may not realize it but the dog might know something about him that he doesn’t know. They have a sense about these things. It’s been observed in nursing homes.
A neighbor brought their Westie over and just gave her to us many years ago. It was November and my dad, who grew up on a farm, said ‘That dog is going to sleep in the garage’. That lasted a couple of days and then he said ’It’s kind of cold out there. She can sleep in the laundry room.’ And a few days after that, she had the run of the house.

My Tabitha was a stray. Took me a year to tame her, sitting outside with her in the cold/snow. Now she is sitting in my lap, both of us very happy.

All our dogs slept outside or in the garage when cold (obviously I did not live in a snowy state)

Love it! Even old dogs — and humans — can learn new tricks.
