In P.J. O’Rourke’s essay “An Intellectual Experiment” he argued cogently that television, as an inherently stupid thing*, must be approached with all the intellectual capacity at one’s command". I think we could extend that to some movies.

*Intellectual things like the New York Review, by comparison, should have the cold hard light of stupidity shone upon it.

I do seem to remember something called ETV. Educational television. I guess that fell out of style.

When I learn something from a movie: it’s Don’t go to another movie with X in it or directed by Y.

I’m with Betty on this. A good movie can simply be entertaining. A fine film should give you something more…

There is a time for serious thought provoking activities and there is a time for “fun”. Betty’s statement seems to imply that everything needs to be meaningful or is a waste of time. I would go with Boring..

Interesting that this strip should drop just as Netflix releases “Don’t Look Up.” The film is certainly about something, but has faced fire for being too ham-handed.

There is a large area between “makes you think” and “requires you don’t think.”

Offhand, i can think of the ‘thinkers’ I enjoyed on one hand. There may be more. Kurosawa esp. Rashomon, Life of Pi, Inception….
