Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer had a humble and unlikely beginning. It was created in 1939 as a story book character to promote retailer Montgomery Ward’s Christmas offerings. The character became so popular that the song was was written for it in 1949 which became a Billboard #1 hit when recorded by singing cowboy Gene Autry.
The idea of flying reindeer was of course conceived by Clement C. Moore in his poem,’ A Visit From St. Nicholas’ way back in 1823 but there were only eight of them.
Thus, Montgomery Ward gave us the ninth which many purists consider to be sacrilege and downright annoying but we are stuck with it because kids embrace it.
I did not know that. Thanks! Just like Santa Claus as we know it seemed to originate from a Coca Cola magazine ad. Ah, crass commercialism! We all love it.Rudolph needs a good maxilliofacial surgeon and probably an oncologist…
