The name “Bend” was derived from “Farewell Bend”, the designation used by early pioneers to refer to the location along the Deschutes River where the town was eventually platted, one of the few fordable points along the river.
And Deschutes itself was named by French trappers, meaning “the rapids.” Bend is a great little city in an amazingly beautiful part of the country. In the famous words of one of our iconic former governors, “Come visit but don’t stay.”
