Getting older, I feel the same way. Been there done that over and over. Losing interest in things. It’s like Groundhog’s Day movie after a few decades.
Jing appears to be going through what I experienced back in 2003 when I started working for Boston Market. I was able to do the job, but I, too, felt like I was “going through the motions”. But then I read a book called “Enthusiasm Makes The Difference” by the late Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. In it, the Dr. describes a method known as “As If”. You think of a positive quality you’d like to have for yourself, and then you act “as if” you already possess that quality. I’m living proof that the method works. I wanted to act like I had great enthusiasm for my work, “as if” I was a master at my job. Very soon, I was doing it for real.
Then, he needs an outside interest. Use his money to finance and focus on that. Baldo’s focus should be on getting the Chevrolet Impala street legal. Four wheels with four tires and a roof would be a good start.
That’s why you work in jobs like that, to give you incentive to move to a better, hopefully higher paying, job. Don’t want to get stuck in a job you don’t want to do for the rest of my your life…..

What would Jing do instead? An electronics shop? Asians are stereotypically good with electronics.

Cars have been pointless for 50 years. The ’69 Vista Cruiser in my avatar had a points-type ignition.

You’re just tire-d. Stop and recharge your battery. Take a brake. You look exhausted.

Should have been fired a long time ago. Worthless in that shop.

The expression is “Running on fumes.” If it’s empty, there’s nothing to run on.
