Because it is near to the sun (nearer than earth is), Venus is seen at as a Morning “Star” or Evening “Star”. Right now (because of where it is in its orbit compared to us) it would appear as a “morning star” (appearing about 2 hours before sunrise) – so not the first “star” of the night (unless it was pretty cloudy – in which case it might be the only one seen through the clouds).
I do remember hearing that the reason Venus is referred to as both the “Evening Star” and the “Morning Star” is because it’s always the first star to arrive in the evening and the last star to fade in the morning.

This week Venus is about 25 times brighter than Sirius (the brightest star in the night sky).
