Long ago, when I taught high school for a year, I had a student who was always causing trouble. I called his mother, and she basically told me that she had given up on him, and he was our problem. Later that year, when he went to the nurse’s office, he had a gun and was threatening to kill himself. I felt so sorry for that kid.
