From the Old Farmer’s Almanac: If Candlemas Day be bright and clear, there’ll be two winters in the year. If Candlemas Day be grey and black, it carries away winter on its back. The Wiccans call it Imbolc (ee-walk) to celebrate the lengthening days (red to orange sun) and Catholicism as the Purification of Mary.
As my grandfather always said, “If the ground hog sees his shadow there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t see it, winter will last another month and a half.”
Local radio station had a daily contest the couple weeks before Feb. 2 in which callers would guess whether their sound effects groundhog would see its shadow that day. Then you’d hear an alarm clock, the groundhog swearing at it (in groundhog, so no offense), the grounshog walking up its stairs, and then either a snippet of the Beach Boys to indicate spring or some other effect for continued winter. The prize was a quantity of pork sausage (think about it).
It’s interesting that in looking this up, I found he had written a 6000 word letter accusing the Church of leniency (a dig at Francis) in causing the abuse scandal, when he was actually part of it himself.
Woodchuck males look to see whether there is food. If not, then take a rest and try again. If there is food, he awakens his mate and off they go eating.
